The Biden administration in the USA wants to ban the sale and import of hardware and software for connected cars from both China and Russia. The measure is motivated to strengthen protection against the risk of cyberattacks, which the US Department of Commerce describes as "very tangible".
According to the department, it primarily concerns protecting communication systems – such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, mobile networks, and satellite connections – in the cars.
This is not about trade or gaining an economic advantage: It is a strict security measure, says US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo.
