The Prison and Probation Service is expanding in several locations in Skåne, the authority announces on its website.
In Tollarp, a former elderly home is being converted into a new open prison with 110 places. The facility is expected to be able to accommodate the first prisoners within 12 months.
The Prison and Probation Service is also planning to expand the prison in Ystad, where female prisoners are held, with 80 places. The prison will more than double its capacity and become the largest for women in the country.
The pressure on prisons and detention centers in the country is high following the many sentencing increases in recent years. The Prison and Probation Service currently has over 10,000 places but needs to increase to around 27,000 by 2033, according to the authority.
The prison in Umeå in northern Sweden is also being expanded. It currently has 107 places in security class 2 and will receive an additional 80 places, the authority states.
