The pressure increases on Gaetz over sex purchases

The pressure is increasing on Matt Gaetz, the former congressman whom Donald Trump has nominated for Attorney General. Gaetz has paid for sex and drugs, according to a lawyer representing two young women who have been questioned by the House of Representatives' ethics committee, reports NBC News.

The committee was to have a final meeting about the report on Gaetz, which they had been working on for a longer period, last Friday last week. A few days earlier, Gaetz left his seat in the House of Representatives after Trump, the incoming president, had nominated him for the post of Minister of Justice.

Since he left his seat, the House of Representatives cannot continue with the report. But from the the Democrats, as well as some of the Republican senators, there are demands that the report should be made public or made available to the senators who are to approve or reject Trump's nomination of Gaetz. As things stand, it is unclear whether Gaetz can be approved.

According to NBC, the committee plans to hold a meeting in the coming days.

The lawyer representing the two women states that they participated in several parties where Gaetz paid them for sex and where illegal drugs were used. On one occasion, in Florida in 2017, one of the women saw the other, who was then 17 years old and underage, having sex with Gaetz. Prostitution is illegal in Florida.

The Department of Justice has previously conducted an investigation into Gaetz's behavior, without taking further action.

Matt Gaetz himself and Donald Trump's staff have described the allegations against Gaetz as baseless and a way for political opponents to disrupt the Trump administration's transition. They also point out that the Department of Justice has refrained from taking action.
