"I thought this country was built by Europeans who fled from a life under a king's rule, to establish a new world governed by the people. We now have a president who calls himself our king. If this is a joke, I'm not laughing", writes Madonna on X.
Trump concluded on Wednesday a post about having abolished a congestion tax of nine dollars for cars in Manhattan with "Long live the king". A post that the White House also published on its social media with an illustration showing Trump wearing a crown.
Trump immediately received criticism, among others from New York's Governor Kathy Hochul, who said at a press conference:
New York has not been under a king's rule for 250 years. And we certainly won't do it now either.
Madonna, 66, was a sharp critic of Trump already during his first term as president and she participated, along with other Trump opponents, in a demonstration after his inauguration on January 20.
But it's not just Madonna who is protesting against Trump. Another frequent critic, author Stephen King, has made an unexpected comeback on X. He left the platform after Trump's election victory in November, but wrote on Friday "Back! Have you missed me"?
And continued:
"Just wanted to say that Trump is a traitor and Putin-loving piece of crap" It goes double for Elon (Musk)!"
