The Liberals want more residence bans around schools

The Liberals want more people than today to be prohibited from staying near schools. People who recruit children to commit crimes are like hungry wolves, without any form of empathy. The school must be a safe zone, says Education Minister Johan Pehrson (L).

The law on residence prohibition came into force a year ago and means that anyone who promotes crime or creates insecurity can be prohibited from staying in a certain area, following a prosecutor's decision.

But the requirement for a significant risk of crime should be lowered when it comes to schools, according to The Liberals. There, a ban should be able to be issued in a more preventive manner, but still following a prosecutor's decision.

Gang Recruitment

We know that recruitment to organized crime against children and young people is extensive, and takes place both digitally and in connection with school environments. Therefore, it is urgent to have a more effective residence prohibition, he says after a meeting he and Education Minister Lotta Edholm (L) had with a long list of authorities and organizations on Monday.

The original purpose of the "crisis meeting" was the increasing number of reports of threats and violence in schools – violence between students, or outgoing students who attack staff.

But the meeting also dealt with school safety. The reason is, of course, the mass shooting at Risbergska school in Örebro.

Early Interventions

"A productive meeting", summarize both ministers and do not rule out that there will be more meetings in the future. The meeting spanned everything from metal detectors and bag checks to the need for more special teachers and school social teams.

There was a unanimous agreement on the importance of early interventions. Early interventions and support save money, says Johan Pehrson and acknowledges at the same time that many schools have had it tough with cutbacks and reduced staff.

The Örebro incident has prompted the government to speed up work on new legislation for increased school safety. Last week, Johan Pehrson announced that the core of the proposals presented by the school safety inquiry will now be "expeditiously" processed to enable law changes to come into force by July 1.

Some of the proposals from the school safety inquiry that the government is taking forward:

Requirement for schools to have preparedness for serious violent situations.

Schools should keep unauthorized persons outside the school area during operating hours. May involve locks and access cards.

Obligation for principals to report crimes related to school activities

Opportunity for schools to search bags in case of risk of disturbances. Should, according to the government, apply to the entire elementary school, high school, and adult education.
