Advertisements with political content, such as election advertising and what is described as social issues, will not be allowed within the union from October, Meta announces.

"This is a difficult decision - one that we have made in response to the EU's upcoming regulations", writes the tech giant and refers to a regulation on transparency in political advertising called TTPA.

According to Meta, the regulation implies an unreasonable level of complexity and legal uncertainty for advertisers and platforms operating in the EU.

The EU's rules were drawn up in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal that erupted in 2018, where it emerged that the consultancy firm gained access to data on millions of Facebook users, which was used to target political advertising at them. The regulation is intended to prevent undue electoral influence.

Google has also announced that it will stop political advertising within the EU in October, when the rules come into force.

Prior to the EU election, most Swedish parties invested a significant part of their respective marketing budgets in advertisements in social media.
