A patient who was to be operated on for colon cancer mistakenly received stomach and intestinal contents in the airway during anesthesia.
The operation was initiated despite the patient having some stomach problems and during anesthesia, unexpectedly large amounts of stomach and intestinal contents came up into the throat, writes Läkartidningen.
The staff then tried to suck up the contents but the operation had to be aborted because the patient became unstable. Despite intensive care in a respirator, the patient died, mainly due to lung damage.
The incident has been reported to the Inspection for Care and Welfare (Ivo) under the Lex Maria regulations.
