The Norwegian Magnus Carlsen was named the greatest chess player of all time on Thursday. He received the award from the president of the International Chess Federation, Russian Arkadij Dvorkovitj, and took the opportunity to demand that the federation not allow Russia and Belarus to rejoin.
Personally, I think Garry Kasparov had a better career, but I understand why I'm getting the prize. But I want to say, to Garry's credit, that I'm sure he would have taken the opportunity to advise against allowing the Russian and Belarusian federations to rejoin. So that's what I'm doing too, said Carlsen.
During the International Chess Federation FIDE's congress in Hungary, a motion has been submitted by Kyrgyzstan to allow Russia and Belarus to rejoin the federation.
Sweden and the other Nordic countries are saying no to easing the sanctions against Belarus and Russia.
