A detainee at the remand prison in Uppsala wanted to use a hair trimmer but was refused. According to the staff, he would have to wait until he arrived at the institution, where it is possible to have a private hair trimmer.
Now the remand prison is getting a slap on the wrist from the Parliamentary Ombudsman (JO).
The JO writes in a decision that it appears obvious that a detainee may need to get a haircut and that it can almost be equated with being able to take care of their personal hygiene. Being denied this "for a not insignificant period" is, according to the JO, not compatible with humane criminal care.
The JO reminds us that someone who is detained has not been convicted of any crime, and that remand periods can be relatively long.
