The National Audit Office has reviewed the Migration Agency's handling of citizenship applications and identifies several deficiencies. One of them is unreasonably long processing times, with many cases having been pending for more than four years, writes the National Audit Office.
The reason is that simpler cases are prioritized, as well as those that ultimately submit a request for a decision. However, there is no plan for when those who do not do so, and are last in line, will receive a response.
The National Audit Office also identifies deficiencies in the Migration Agency's decision-making basis. It occurs that important information that comes in is not flagged, and therefore risks not being detected.
"The government is working intensively to both tighten the requirements for citizenship and strengthen security in citizenship cases", writes Minister for Migration Johan Forssell (M) on X, who believes that the situation is due to "many years of Social Democratic migration policy".
