Last year, the limit for when the Defence Forces need the government's approval to invest in equipment was raised from 200 to 700 million kronor.
Now, they want even more freedom – and to completely eliminate the government's involvement in two equipment categories. This emerges from the Defence Forces' budget proposal for 2026–2028, which has been submitted to the government, according to Altinget.
According to the proposal, they will be able to decide on their own, regardless of the amount, to purchase ongoing procurement of bulk materials such as personal equipment, standard vehicles, and simple ammunition, as well as to replace equipment donated to Ukraine.
Otherwise, the current limit for the government's involvement of 700 million kronor is proposed to remain. For strategic equipment projects such as fighter jets and ship systems, the decision lies with the government.
The purpose is to accelerate investments to "further promote rapid capability growth".
The Defence Forces also want the government to continue making ongoing decisions on equipment investments rather than reverting to the previous order with decisions made once a year.
