Minister of Finance Elisabeth Svantesson (The Moderate Party) is critical of the banks not lowering mortgage rates more – at the same time as they make large profits. It is unacceptable, she says.

A number of banks have lowered their mortgage rates in recent weeks. However, the adjustments, particularly among the major banks, have not yet been on par with the Swedish Central Bank's reduction of 0.25 percentage points.

Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson (M) says she is now keeping an eye on the banks.

It has caught my attention that banks have had extremely high profits, while mortgage customers have had a tough time in recent years. This is unacceptable, she says.

She believes that many banks should do more.

Different banks have done different amounts. But there is more to be done, since it is clearly the case that they are making large profits, she says.

In connection with the interest rate announcement earlier in the week, the Swedish Central Bank indicated that three further reductions may come this year.
