A kitesurfer was rescued after using stones to spell out the word "HELP" when he became stranded on a beach in northern California over the weekend, authorities reported.
The surfer became stuck on a narrow beach at the foot of high cliffs when the tide came in. A private helicopter spotted his plea, and the authorities were informed.
A rescue helicopter then lifted the kitesurfer to the top of the cliff. He did not require medical attention.
The coastal area is located around 10 miles south of San Francisco.
