Storm around Starmer's received gifts

Less than three months after being elected on the promise to restore trust in politics, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is trying to shake off a criticism storm – which concerns his acceptance of gifts from a wealthy businessman and long-time Labour donor.

The Labour leader Starmer denies that any irregularities have occurred, since he and his wife were accused of receiving clothes and glasses worth thousands of pounds.

Members of Parliament are allowed to receive gifts, but must declare them within 28 days – a deadline that Starmer has exceeded.

According to the Prime Minister, the delay is due to his assistants trying to clarify exactly what needed to be declared.

Moreover, media reports suggest that there is a storm brewing internally among Starmer's staff about the high salary of his top political adviser, Sue Gray. According to BBC, she earns 170,000 pounds, equivalent to around 2.3 million kronor, per year – which is 3,000 pounds more than what the Prime Minister is paid.

The government is dismissing the criticism by pointing out that civil servants' salaries are not determined by politicians.
