The new target is announced in connection with the start of the UN's climate meeting COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Starmer is attending, but many other leaders of the economic superpowers within G20 are skipping the event this year.

We are building on our reputation as climate leaders, says Starmer at a press conference, where he simultaneously assures that his government does not plan to start dictating how the British should start living.

The previous British government promised in 2021 to reduce emissions by 78 percent compared to 1990 within the same time period.
