Peruvian authorities are tightening security at the Inca city of Machu Picchu, after tourists were filmed spreading what is believed to be human ashes.
Last week, a video on Tiktok caused an uproar in the country. The video, with the text "saying goodbye with lots of love at Machu Picchu", shows a woman taking ashes from a plastic bag and throwing them in the air before hugging another woman. Hashtags with the words "ashes" and "spreading ashes" were used together with the video.
César Medina, responsible for the popular tourist attraction, states that more guards will now be hired and more surveillance cameras installed. Although there is no ban in the law on spreading human ashes in public, it will nonetheless be prohibited at Machu Picchu for health reasons.
