Soon cheaper to defy yellow light

Running a yellow light is – beyond many people's knowledge – prohibited. But soon it won't be as expensive to get caught for the prohibited passing.

Generally, a driver must stop at a yellow light – just like at a red light – but with the exception of when it is not possible to do so in a traffic-safe manner.

As it stands now, the fine for passing at a yellow light is the same as for a red light, 3,000 kronor. But from February 21, the fine for driving against a yellow light will be reduced to 2,000 kronor, which Teknikens Värld was the first to report on.

The purpose of the reduction, which the Chancellor of Justice has decided on, is to make a differentiation between driving against a yellow light and a red light.

"When a multi-color signal shows red, there is no doubt that it is hazardous to drive past the stop line or equivalent. When the signal shows yellow, the traffic hazard is not as obvious since there is a margin in relation to when other traffic enters the intersection", says Deputy Chief Prosecutor Johan Bülow, who led the work, in a press release.

It is simply not considered as serious to defy a yellow light as a red one.

In addition to the reduction for driving against a yellow light, there will also be changes in the fines for, among other things, securing loads, and for A-traktor drivers without an LGF sign properly mounted, the fines will be increased from 500 kronor to 1,500 kronor.
