It's certainly cozy to light Advent candles and cook by the stove this time of year. But it can also be dangerous, especially if you lack a smoke detector.

In 2023, the rescue service responded to 5,886 fires in homes, according to the Swedish Agency for Civil Contingency Planning (MSB). 1,473 of them – 25 percent – of the affected homes lacked smoke detectors.

At the same time, only four percent of all households in Sweden completely lack smoke detectors, according to MSB.

"We cannot stress enough the importance of testing your smoke detectors at home and ensuring they function. Test your smoke detector at least once a quarter and take the opportunity to practice fire drills at home at the same time," says Håkan Franzén, insurance expert at Trygg-Hansa, in a press release.
