Eight migrants, six of them children, died when the boat they were on sank in the Aegean Sea, according to the Greek coastguard.
Nearly 40 people were rescued from the waves. The search and rescue operation continues, despite strong winds.
The accident occurred north of the island of Samos, after a route often used by human traffickers.
