After the House of Representatives voted through a proposal on Tuesday with a small margin to avoid a shutdown, the danger seemed to be on its way to being averted.
But a day later, the Democrats' minority leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, says that the party's senators will not support the proposal.
The reason is that the Republican proposal, according to NBC and ABC, is entirely in line with President Donald Trump's policy on, among other things, border controls and taxes. But without the support of at least seven Democrats in the Senate, the proposal does not have sufficient support.
Funding the public sector should be a non-partisan issue, but the Republicans chose a partisan path, they presented their proposal without seeking input - not at all - from the Democrats in Congress, he says according to NBC News.
Instead, Schumer has presented a proposal that will give a month's respite for negotiations on an agreement.
If no decision is made, the government will shut down on Friday.
I hope our Republican colleagues will join us to avoid a shutdown on Friday, says Schumer.
