Eight years ago, a combative Hollywood met the newly elected President Donald Trump. Now, feelings of defeat are dominating the industry — and critics are finding it harder to make their voices heard, writes LA Times.

Despite its two Oscar nominations, Ali Abbasi's film "The Apprentice", which depicts Donald Trump's path to power, has struggled to get distribution in the USA. The problems began already during Trump's presidential campaign, when he threatened to file a lawsuit to stop the film.

The same fate is now befalling more political films in Trump's USA, for example "Union", which portrays the first union struggle at one of Amazon's warehouses. The film was Oscar-nominated - but failed to get a distributor. At the same time, Amazon recently announced that the company is investing over 40 million dollars, approximately 437 million kronor, in a documentary about President's wife Melania Trump.

Uncertainty about the future is growing now in Hollywood, according to Tom Nunan, co-responsible for the producer program at UCLA School of Theatre, Film and Television. Not least because large parts of the capital have sided with Trump.

— I don't think people have really figured out what to do yet, how to express themselves or what will be the most effective.

He feels that a sense of defeat pervades Los Angeles.

It's really unfortunate.
