As a result of the USA's new policy, Save the Children is forced to close down in Sri Lanka, Poland, Brazil, Georgia, and Liberia, they announce. The extensive cutbacks put children's lives and futures at stake, according to the organization.
"This is a direct failure from those in power and a moral failure for all of us," says CEO Inger Ashing in a press release.
The USA's aid agency has provided a large part of the organization's funding, including for healthcare and vaccination programs.
The consequences will soon be seen in the form of higher maternal mortality, more children dying from malnutrition, and more children not being able to attend school, says Åsa Regnér, Secretary General of Swedish Save the Children.
"In the end, it is the children in the poorest parts of the world who will pay the price."
