Sad orca mother has got a new calf

The orca Tahlequah carried her dead calf on her head for over two weeks during the summer of 2018 – a mourning ceremony that drew international attention. Now Tahlequah, who also goes by the name J35, has got a new calf.

But not everything is peaceful and joyful. Researchers who follow the orca pod in the sea off the American state of Washington are worried about the calf's health, reports Sky News.

"The calf has also been observed being pushed around on J35's head and did not look particularly lively, which is concerning", writes the Center for Whale Research in a Facebook post.

The center states that the first time in life is dangerous for young calves, with a very high mortality rate during the first year.

"J35 is an experienced mother and we hope that she can keep J61 alive during the difficult first time", write the researchers.
