A Russian submarine is passing through the Danish strait Great Belt on its way north on Tuesday, writes Berlingske.

We are aware of it, but it happens at regular intervals, and it can sail there if it wants, says Lars Wulff, duty chief at the Danish defense's operations center, to the newspaper.

The Russian submarine has been joined by ships from the Danish defense during the day. According to Lars Wulff, it is a normal measure to show presence when a country that is not a member of NATO sails through Danish waters.

According to Berlingske, it is unclear why the Russian submarine is traveling through the Great Belt.

The strait is the middle one of three connecting routes to the Baltic Sea.
