Russian skiers still banned

Even in winter's international skiing competitions, it is a stop for Russian and Belarusian skiers. The decision was made public during the International Ski Federation's (FIS) meeting in Zurich.

It feels good, Sweden belongs to the part of FIS that really supports the ban continuing to apply as long as nothing has changed in Ukraine. It doesn't feel okay to let them in as things are now, says the cross-country skiing chief in the Swedish Ski Association, Lars Öberg, to Expressen.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowed some Russians and Belarusians to participate in the Olympic Games in Paris. Therefore, there has been a small concern that FIS would go the same way.

Considering what has happened within the IOC, one could not be completely sure how FIS would handle the issue now, says Öberg.

Russians and Belarusians have been banned from international skiing competitions since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Several Swedish national team skiers told TT almost two weeks ago that Russians and Belarusians should remain banned.

My opinion is that nothing has changed and therefore no change should be made, said Linn Svahn.
