Two French citizens have been arrested suspected of an explosion at Russia's consulate in southern French Marseille earlier in the week. The two individuals are both employed at the French national center for scientific research, CNRS, in France.

One of the suspects is a chemist and the other is an engineer.

Three plastic bottles were thrown into the consulate's garden and two exploded on the third anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine on Monday.

The bottles contained a cocktail of nitrogen and other chemical substances.

No one was injured and no damage was reported to the building.

Russia called the incident a "terrorist attack", while the French government condemned "all breaches of security at diplomatic sites".
