Reports: Trump considers economic emergency

Donald Trump is considering declaring a national economic emergency in the USA to be able to implement the trade tariffs he has promised. This is reported by CNN, citing four different sources.

Such an emergency situation would, according to CNN, give Trump a legal opportunity to introduce tariffs, since it would give the future president unilateral right to handle imports to the country.

Donald Trump threatened in 2019 to use the same legislation to introduce tariffs against Mexico – if the country did not stop the illegal immigration across the border.

According to CNN's sources, however, no decision on economic emergency has been made, and all options "are on the table".

The reports triggered a stock market fall in, among others, New York and Stockholm.

At the close in Stockholm, the stock exchange was 0.4 percent down. Even in Frankfurt and Paris, it was minus, while the New York stock exchange had recovered.
