"Release the Peace Prize Winner: 'Woman, Life, Freedom!'"

Hello freedom! shouted human rights activist Narges Mohammadi when she was released from prison on Wednesday due to health reasons – without wearing a hijab, which is mandatory for women in Iran. Woman, life, freedom! Freedom is our right! Long live freedom!

The pardon is temporary after the 52-year-old peace prize winner underwent a complicated operation on a leg due to cancer concerns, according to her supporters.

According to them, the three planned weeks of freedom are not enough.

"After over ten years in prison, Narges needs specialized medical care in a safe, sanitary environment – a fundamental human right. According to doctors, at least three months of rehabilitation is crucial for her recovery", they write in a statement.

Mohammadi has been imprisoned since the fall of 2021 and has been sentenced several times since then – her sentence has been extended by additional years, and more lashes.

She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for having worked for women's rights in deeply conservative Islamic Iran for over 20 years.
