This year, the snow on Swedish glaciers has disappeared unusually quickly due to the heat. This can quickly cause problems for mountain hikers.
A week into July, it looks like the end of August, a warm summer, says mountain guide Anders Bergwall, who is the incident commander at the mountain rescue, to P4 Norrbotten.
This year's early melting also poses problems for mountain hikers as heavy rain can quickly cause the water level in streams to rise rapidly. The lack of snow on top of the glaciers has eliminated their ability to absorb water. Instead, they become like a metal roof where the water flows straight over to the streams, according to Anders Bergwall.
We also have a lot of problems with rockslides. The snow that normally holds the rocks in place has already melted away, and then the rocks release, he says.
