The hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, announces that the man who had a relationship with the OS athlete passed away on Monday evening – just a few days after Rebecca Cheptegei died at the same hospital.

It is unclear whether Cheptegei was still together with the man when he bought gasoline on September 1, poured it over her, and set her on fire. This happened after a quarrel in Trans Nozia, Kenya, near the border with Uganda.

Kenyan media have previously reported that one of the athlete's daughters witnessed what happened.

He kicked me when I tried to help my mom, she says.

I cried for help, a neighbor came and tried to put out the flames with water, but it didn't work.

Cheptegei was taken to the hospital with life-threatening burns, but last Thursday, the news came that she had died from her injuries. She was 33 years old.

It was then reported that the man was also being treated for severe burns after the attack on Cheptegei.

The athlete will receive a military funeral since she was part of Uganda's military forces, according to Cheptegei's father, Mzee Joseph Cheptegei, as reported by Kenya Star. She will be buried in Bukwo, eastern Uganda, on Saturday.

Cheptegei finished 44th in the marathon event in Paris with a time of 2:32:14.
