The deadly bluetongue virus is now spreading rapidly among Danish livestock. The first case in Denmark was discovered two weeks ago. Now, more than 30 farms may be affected.
Cattle, sheep, and goats are at risk from the virus, which can lead to death.
It can absolutely appear here and we are on alert, said Karl Ståhl, state epizootologist at the National Veterinary Institute (SVA), recently to TT.
The virus is spread by midges. In Denmark, it has been confirmed that 19 livestock farms are infected and another 14 farms are suspected to be affected, mainly in southern Jutland, according to the Danish Food Authority.
The authority assesses that there is a high risk of the contagious virus spreading to all parts of Denmark, reports the news agency Ritzau.
