David Johansen's cancer has spread in his body and he has been bedridden since a fall in November when he got two fractures in his back. Now the situation is tough for the singer, who has started an online collection to cover his healthcare costs, writes Rolling Stone.

"I have never had so much pain in my entire life", writes Johansen on his collection page.

The artist has not been so open about his cancer disease before, but now reveals that he has been affected by a brain tumor. Now he needs care and supervision around the clock.

David Johansen broke through in the early 1970s in the rock group New York Dolls, which is often highlighted in rock history as punk pioneers. The group also included, among others, Johnny Thunders and Sylvain Sylvain. After his time in New York Dolls, David Johansen began a solo career.

In the 1980s, Johansen got a broader breakthrough with hits on the top lists, such as "Hot hot hot", when he performed under the artist name Buster Poindexter.
