The 18th of May, Poland is going to the polls, announces the country's parliament.

Conservative Andrzej Duda has then sat as president for two terms and can therefore not stand again.

Duda is close to the opposition party Law and Justice (PIS), which ruled the country before Prime Minister Donald Tusk took over the government with a coalition government after the 2023 election.

The President has vetoed most of the government's bills.

The election appears to be between the government group Civic Coalition's candidate, Rafal Trzaskowski, who is the mayor of Warsaw, and Karol Nawrocki, who is backed by PIS.
