Nine days after a surgical operation in January, a patient was discharged from Näl hospital, despite complaining of severe abdominal pain and shortness of breath. The same evening, the patient had to be taken back to the hospital by ambulance, and it was then discovered that the intestine had ruptured, leading to an acute operation. This is reported by TTELA.
The incident has been reported to the Health and Social Care Inspectorate, Ivo, and the hospital will now take a number of measures. Among other things, an educational effort will be made regarding the assessment of abdominal status, it will be ensured that nurse assistants contact nurses in the event of deteriorating patient condition, and it will also be ensured that medications administered are correctly prescribed.
Recently, Näl hospital self-reported a Lex Maria case in another intestinal matter. Then, a cancer patient had the wrong part of the colon removed after the surgeon misinterpreted the gastroenterologist's marking of where the tumor was located.
