An unvaccinated school-age child in the state of Texas died last week – the first American death from measles since 2015. Another unvaccinated adult in New Mexico tested positive for measles after their death, and the death is therefore classified as measles-related.
According to figures from Friday, a total of 198 people had been infected in Texas and 30 people had been infected in New Mexico.
"More cases are expected as this outbreak continues to grow rapidly", says the CDC in a statement.
"As the spring and summer travel season approaches in the USA, the CDC emphasizes the important role that doctors and healthcare personnel play in preventing the spread of measles", the statement continues.
