"It is exceptionally many men who have been able to be identified during an operation that only lasted for four evenings", says Simon Häggström at the police in Stockholm city on the police's website.

The affected men will now have their case tried in the district court, which takes place after the penalties for buying sex were tightened in August 2022 and fines were removed from the penalty scale.

Besides the police, social workers participated in the operation. The police emphasize that the work is based on a combination of physical surveillance and investigative work. The method is based on creating mutual trust between victims of crime and the police.

"The police should contribute to the cultural shift that needs to be made in society regarding buying sex", says Annika Laestadius, acting police area chief.
