Norway's government proposes to extend the right to free abortion from week 12 to week 18.
"Today's abortion law has played an important role for women across the country for decades, and my goal is for the new abortion law to stand the test of time as well", says Health Minister Jan Christian Vestre (Ap) in a press release.
In Sweden, women have had the right to decide on abortion up to and including the 18th week of pregnancy since 1974. In Norway, a pregnant woman can apply for an abortion from week 13 to week 22, which is then considered by a special committee.
In a report in December, an inquiry concluded that the right to free abortion in Norway should be extended in the manner proposed by the government on Friday.
The proposal will now be presented to the parliament.
