Norway's government wants to see a ban on all exports of weapons that can be used in operations in Palestinian areas occupied by Israel. Norway is one of 52 countries that have written to the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, urging a limited stop to arms exports to Israel.
The letter is also addressed to the United Kingdom, which currently holds the presidency of the UN Security Council.
Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik (Ap), State Secretary in the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, notes that the demand does not include a general ban on arms exports to Israel, reports Norwegian NTB.
This is a reminder that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has stated that arms deliveries used in occupied areas and in the Gaza Strip should not take place, said Motzfeldt Kravik.
Among the countries backing the letter are also South Africa, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Brazil, Mexico, and Russia.
