According to the trade union Unionen, 129 officials are being laid off in Västerås, 81 in Stockholm, and a smaller number in Skellefteå, of which 90 are members of Unionen.
Unionen members affected will be contacted by their nearest manager on Thursday and Friday. "It has been tough negotiations under enormous time pressure for us elected representatives. But the tough decisions need to be made to secure the company's future," says Shaneika Jeffrey from the Unionen club at Northvolt in a written comment to TT.
The negotiations regarding how many will be laid off in Skellefteå are not yet clear. And as for IF Metall's members, it is not clear either.
Fewer than feared
Northvolt initially announced that 400 jobs would be cut in Västerås and 200 in Stockholm. In both locations, it is mainly officials who are affected.
We have managed to find some opportunities for reassignment and similar measures that have reduced the total figure. It is, of course, positive, says Teodor Mellström, chairman of the Akademikerföreningen at Northvolt and member of Sveriges Ingenjörer.
Mellström describes the message as difficult but also a relief for many.
One has lived in uncertainty and known that major cuts would be made, but not had a clue about how it would affect oneself. Now one gets such a decision.
"What does the future look like?"
At the same time, it is impossible to blow away the danger for the crisis-ridden company, notes Teodor Mellström.
Of course, one wonders. I made it this time, but what does the future look like? The hope is, of course, that these are decisions that will take the company forward and make sure that there is a company left and many employees who get to keep their jobs.
How do you view future job opportunities for the academics who will be laid off in Skellefteå?
We still have the impression that it looks promising in Skellefteå. There are many who are interested in engineers and other academics. Even a municipality like Umeå has come out and said that there are jobs available. The problem up north is that it is not always easy to find a new job in the same town.
