At least ten people have died after a volcanic eruption in Indonesia. The volcano Lewtobo Lakilaki, located on the island of Flores in eastern Indonesia, erupted just before midnight local time.
Initially, the death toll varied, but during the morning Swedish time, the country's disaster authority reports that at least ten people have died. Rescue personnel are searching for more dead under houses that have collapsed.
At least 10,000 people live in areas affected by the eruption.
Several nearby villages have been forced to evacuate due to the lava. Images show how some of them are completely covered in ash and fire.
The warning level has been raised to the highest on a four-level scale, and the public is advised to stay at least seven kilometers away from the crater.
The island nation of Indonesia is located in the so-called Ring of Fire in the Pacific Ocean, an area with intense seismic and volcanic activity, and is therefore frequently affected by volcanic eruptions.
