The officer, who worked for the Ukrainian security service SBU, was shot on a parking lot on Thursday morning, reports BBC.
On surveillance footage from the scene, a man can be seen shooting several shots at the officer as he walks towards a car. The police in Kyiv say they are trying to identify and apprehend the perpetrator.
SBU has not confirmed the victim's identity, but according to Ukrainian media, it is a colonel. The security service in Ukraine is mainly focused on the internal security of the country, but since the Russian large-scale invasion in 2022, SBU has also played a prominent role in sabotage and attacks within Russia.
Sources within SBU have previously stated to media, including BBC, that they killed the Russian lieutenant general Igor Kirillov in December 2024. Russia has also accused Ukraine of being behind a car bomb that killed a high-ranking Russian general in the city of Balashikha in April this year.
