The leader of the military junta in Mali, Assimi Goïta, has approved a law that gives him the presidency for an indefinite period.
The new law, which was signed by Goïta himself, grants him a presidential mandate of five years – but which can be renewed "as many times as necessary" and without an election being held.
This allows Goïta to rule the West African country until at least 2030, despite a promise from the military regime last year to return to civilian rule.
The law is the latest in a series of decisions being made to consolidate the regime's power in the country.
