In Catalonia, trains are being suspended indefinitely, announces Transport Minister Óscar Puente. Several flights at El Prat Airport in Barcelona are being diverted and motorways have been closed.
Rescue workers who have searched for victims in a large flooded garage in Valencia, where many deaths were feared, have not found any fatalities, according to local police, as reported by radio station Cadena Ser.
According to Spain's Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska, the authorities cannot provide a reliable estimate of how many people are missing. Spanish TV channel RTVE has, however, broadcast appeals for help from several people who are missing relatives.
