The Greenlandic government states in a press release that Denmark is increasing its military presence on the island and in the Arctic this summer.
Special forces are to train in winter conditions, a frigate is to strengthen the maritime environment and two heavy transport helicopters are to provide operational support. In addition, F-16 planes are to be stationed at the Kangerlussuaq airport and begin patrolling Greenland's west coast.
“The increased presence of the Danish defense force must take place with an eye to local circumstances and the specific security policy challenges in Greenland,” says Denmark's defense minister Troels Lund Poulsen in the press release.
US President Donald Trump has on several occasions said he wants to take control of Greenland and has not ruled out using force.
