The condom is one of two from that time that exists preserved to this day, says Rijksmuseum's curator Joyce Zelen to BBC.
It is made of animal intestine and has a print that – for unclear reason – depicts a nun and three priests with exposed genitals. It also has an inscription: "Voilà mon choix" ("This is my choice").
The museum found it by chance at an auction last year and purchased it for an exhibition about prostitution and sexuality in the 19th century.
The response has been fantastic. As far as we can assess, we are the only art museum that has a printed condom, says Rijksmuseum's curator.
The condom is unused, shows an examination that has been done with UV light. It probably originates from a French brothel.
The exhibition continues until November.
