Mi Xiaoqi, professor at the University of Tongren in Guizhou Province in southwestern China, listed the newly discovered spider species in an article published in the academic journal Zoological Research.

The article, which was published in December, has since become viral and generated over 26 million views via a hashtag on the social media platform Weibo. Weibo users have dubbed Mi Xiaoqi as the "ultimate fan".

Taiwanese Jay Chou, known for his romantic pop ballads, is one of the world's most popular Mandarin-speaking artists. He has sold over 30 million records and won the World Music Award four times.

Naming spiders after Jay Chou's songs brings scientific research closer to the general public, says Mi Xiaoqi to the state-run Chinese news agency New China.
