CPB distributes federal funds to more than 1,500 local radio and TV stations, of which almost half make radio for rural areas. Among them, many channels from the public service companies PBS and NPR.

Trump, who has called CPB a "swamp" and long claimed that the public service channels are left-driven, has been approved by Congress to for the first time in over 50 years withdraw the federal grants to the organization.

"Despite the extraordinary efforts of millions of Americans who called, wrote and appealed to Congress to preserve federal funding for CPB, we are now facing the harsh reality of shutting down our operations", says Patricia Harrison, CEO and president.

In the USA, only a fraction of the revenue to the public service companies comes from federal sources. For the typical local radio station, the federal grants from CPB account for about 13 percent of the revenue, writes Bloomberg.
