The number of visits to the country's museums increased by over 5 per cent compared to the previous year.
In 2023, 28.4 million museum visits were made, indicating a continued increase, albeit at a slower pace, according to statistics from the cultural analysis authority.
"We see a clear increase compared to 2022. Museums are now getting closer to the 2019 figures, which was a record year in terms of visits," says Erik Vestin, statistician at the authority in a press release.
However, visits have decreased at museums where free admission was abolished at the beginning of 2023, including the National Museum, according to a recently published report.
"The official museum statistics complement the picture, showing that most other museums increased the number of visits during the same period. The abolition of free admission also leaves other marks on the statistics. The central museums had a lower proportion of revenue from public grants and a higher proportion from entrance fees in 2023 compared to 2022," says Erik Vestin.
