The influx of detainees and convicts is going faster than we previously calculated. Even the detention periods are increasing, says Torbjörn Nyberg, unit manager at the Prison and Probation Service, to the radio.
In cells where one person lives, and which are between six and eight square meters in size, the single bed can be replaced with a bunk bed, he says.
You can be locked in there for half a day together, he says, and adds that access to shared facilities such as showers and dining areas becomes a challenge.
Of the nearly 11,000 places available in the country's institutions and prisons, a quarter are already so-called double occupations today.
