The construction industry is physically demanding and stressful, which can affect both physical and mental health, according to researchers.

"In our previous research, long-term pain is also highlighted as a factor that can lead to excessive consumption of alcohol and pain medication," says Maria Åberg, professor of general medicine at Sahlgrenska Academy and co-author of the study, in a comment.

The highest suicidal behavior is found among men who do not work at all. There, the risk is twice as high as among all men.

The least suicide-prone are men who work as sales and marketing managers.

The study is based on data from over 1.5 million Swedish men of working age. During the period 2002-2019, over two percent had at least one suicidal event, including 31,797 suicide attempts and 5,526 suicides.
